OPINION: As Concealed Carry Increases, No Crime Increases

As Concealed Carry Increases, No Crime Increases

Thomas Jefferson said, “No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.”

In fairly recent times, carrying a firearm for protection could earn you a felony conviction. In Illinois or Wisconsin (Wisconsin’s law changes November 1, 2011), it still can. Luckily, the people have spoken and law-abiding citizens now can legally carry a weapon.  People are taking advantage of their 2nd-Amendment rights in rapidly increasing numbers around the country, and crime is decreasing. Coincidence, or cause and effect?

Some solid arguments point to crime going down when people own guns: Florida cites significant decreases in crime since passing their CCW law in 1987, and the State of Vermont has one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the country, even though they permit CCW without a permit. Washington, DC is a gun-free zone, and has one of the highest crime rates.

Variables that play into the crime rate are the number of arrests made, how many criminals are currently behind bars, and how strict enforcement is, among other things. Variables like these make it hard to isolate the positive direction in crime rates, but a majority of police officers says they feel safer dealing with a CCW permit holder than the public at large. Knowing a person was vetted by law enforcement is reassuring. Most often, a thorough background check and safety training skills are the minimum requirements for a license.

On the flip side, no reports or statistics have been touted to prove that crime rates increase when concealed carry is allowed, as critics alleged would happen.  This is one of the reasons that the number of CCW holders increase daily.
